Summary

Just making a decision can be hard enough, but how do you begin to judge whether it's the right one? Chip and Dan Heath, authors of #1 New York Times best-seller Switch, show you how to overcome your brain's natural shortcomings。

In Decisive, Chip and Dan Heath draw on decades of psychological research to explain why we so often get it very badly wrong - why our supposedly rational brains are frequently tripped up by powerful biases and wishful thinking。 At the same time they demonstrate how relatively easy it is to avoid the pitfalls and find the best answers, offering four simple principles that we can all learn and follow。 In the process, they show why it is that experts frequently make mistakes。 They demonstrate the perils of getting trapped in a narrow decision frame。 And they explore people's tendency to be over-confident about how their choices will unfold。

Drawing on case studies as diverse as the downfall of Kodak and the inspiring account of a cancer survivor, they offer both a fascinating tour through the workings of our minds and an invaluable guide to making smarter decisions。

Winner in the Practical Manager category of the CMI Management Book of the Year awards 2014。

Really enjoyed the stories in this one。

There are some good tips in this book, but the thing that bothered me about it was the overwhelming number of anecdotes that artificially inflated it。 There's not enough actual advice in here to justify much more than a long article, let alone 200+ pages of a book。 Pretty early on I grew bored with the irrelevant anecdotes that only tangentially related to the point the author was trying to make, and I started skipping large sections of the chapters。 I didn't feel I missed anything important。 Th There are some good tips in this book, but the thing that bothered me about it was the overwhelming number of anecdotes that artificially inflated it。 There's not enough actual advice in here to justify much more than a long article, let alone 200+ pages of a book。 Pretty early on I grew bored with the irrelevant anecdotes that only tangentially related to the point the author was trying to make, and I started skipping large sections of the chapters。 I didn't feel I missed anything important。 Three stars because there is some solid advice in here if after one wades through the unnecessary storytelling。 。。。more

For anyone looking for guidance in making some tough decisions, this book helped me make some of mine。 It also provided me tools to use in further life。

Pretty good。 Listened on audio。 Some things more obvious than others。 But some helpful tips overall。 Not life changing

The four steps to take a better decision are (1) Widen your options – don’t accept few initial options that come into mind suddenly。 Explore more options。 Don’t think to choose one only, you can choose and work on a combination of options。 (2) Reality test – Know your assumptions, ask questions on it , think what if your assumptions were false or what if opposite were true。 Don’t just guess, do some real prototype work, test your options with small experiments。 (3) Attain distance before decidin The four steps to take a better decision are (1) Widen your options – don’t accept few initial options that come into mind suddenly。 Explore more options。 Don’t think to choose one only, you can choose and work on a combination of options。 (2) Reality test – Know your assumptions, ask questions on it , think what if your assumptions were false or what if opposite were true。 Don’t just guess, do some real prototype work, test your options with small experiments。 (3) Attain distance before deciding – think as a third person – think that you are advising your friend and your friend is facing the problem, not you。 Think using 10/10/10 rule – how this option will affect you in next 10 minutes, then 10 months and then, 10 years。 (4) Prepare to be wrong – overconfidence or overoptimism can ignore the many pitfalls and hinder your decision making process。 Think you are wrong and then think what steps you can take to improve the situations。 This will add a useful margin of error and prepare you for any problems。_________________be a part of my psychological and self-improvement test at upashu1。wordpress。com/fashion/ 。。。more

An enjoyable read - not groundbreaking for me at this point in my life but some nice case studies and examples。 I wish it had been a bit more focused on business decisions but it really blended personal and business which made it somewhat more difficult to sort through the frameworks。

This book covers a basic framework that tries to help us make better decision makers in life。 The WRAP framework as they say is an acronym of: Widening your options, Reality testing our assumptions, Attaining distance before deciding, & Preparing to be wrong。A must read for someone who likes to read difficult texts。 Reading it slowly would bring maximum results。 Need to read it again。Get it now: https://amzn。to/2Sus6sp This book covers a basic framework that tries to help us make better decision makers in life。 The WRAP framework as they say is an acronym of: Widening your options, Reality testing our assumptions, Attaining distance before deciding, & Preparing to be wrong。A must read for someone who likes to read difficult texts。 Reading it slowly would bring maximum results。 Need to read it again。Get it now: https://amzn。to/2Sus6sp 。。。more

This book has a lot of good content。 However, none of it was unique from concepts I have previously read about。 To be fair the Heath Bros do make reference to a lot of popular books (like Thinking Fast and Slow and Jim Collins's work)。Overall the repackaging of familiar topics offered a few unique insights, if you're familiar with The Lean Startup, Thinking Fast and Slow, Good to Great, Range, and Nudge, you can probably skip this book。 This book has a lot of good content。 However, none of it was unique from concepts I have previously read about。 To be fair the Heath Bros do make reference to a lot of popular books (like Thinking Fast and Slow and Jim Collins's work)。Overall the repackaging of familiar topics offered a few unique insights, if you're familiar with The Lean Startup, Thinking Fast and Slow, Good to Great, Range, and Nudge, you can probably skip this book。 。。。more

The book is good。 Has many tips how to make better decisions, the WRAP method is also quite clear。 However, sometimes, the book wanders off the topic and less detail could bring more straightforwardness

This is such a fantastic book。 Dan and Chip share their decision making principles using relatable life and work anecdotes。 They provide a variety of different approaches depending on the situation。 The writing is clear and they use straightforward language。 I particularly liked the last section in the book where they look at roadblocks and scenarios to really support the reader to take on board the strategies within the book。 I highly recommend this book and will no doubt come back to the prini This is such a fantastic book。 Dan and Chip share their decision making principles using relatable life and work anecdotes。 They provide a variety of different approaches depending on the situation。 The writing is clear and they use straightforward language。 I particularly liked the last section in the book where they look at roadblocks and scenarios to really support the reader to take on board the strategies within the book。 I highly recommend this book and will no doubt come back to the priniciples within it when I need them! 。。。more

Making the right decisions takes some concerted effort。 If you have read "Thinking, Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman, you know that our gut instincts can fail us at times and that there are a few pitfalls of letting our emotions guide important decisions。 In 'Decisive', Chip and Dan Heath go through a model that helps us address the four most common pitfalls in decision making by systematically following their approach。 The book is useful to give you a framework for decision-making that can cat Making the right decisions takes some concerted effort。 If you have read "Thinking, Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman, you know that our gut instincts can fail us at times and that there are a few pitfalls of letting our emotions guide important decisions。 In 'Decisive', Chip and Dan Heath go through a model that helps us address the four most common pitfalls in decision making by systematically following their approach。 The book is useful to give you a framework for decision-making that can catch pitfalls such as framing your problem too narrowly (therefore missing opportunity areas), giving in to your biases by looking for confirming data (and disregarding or not looking into disconfirming data), etc。 It's a great book and a good read for anyone who makes important decisions (who doesn't?) and would like to improve their decision-making process。 I liked their simple approach with plenty of illustrative stories on how these pitfalls play out in real-life scenarios, even at the highest ranks of top companies。 。。。more

Very practical advice on why simply making pro and con lists before making decisions often leads to bad ones。 Basically it’s because of our biases。 But he goes a step further and explains how to overcome these biases by reframing, gaining perspective and reality testing。 I think I’ll be referring back to this advice regularly on big decisions。 Especially group decisions that ate contentious。

Wayne Lin

Decisive provides a lot of helpful, practical ways to approach decision making - especially in a business context。 I enjoyed the various anecdotes, and real world industry examples。I think the hardest part from reading books like this however is, as always, putting learnings into real world practice。
